Gluten-Free Does Not Mean Flavor Free

We must have brownies on our brains these days. Went to Sam’s Club and low and behold we found they are now carrying Krusteaz Gluten-Free Double Chocolate Brownie Mix ($6.98 at our Sam's) and Krusteaz Gluten-Free All Purpose Flour blend ($9.98 at our Sam's). Can you believe it? So guess which one we tried first? Yep, you guessed it – brownies.  Of course, I didn’t follow the directions – I know this is a surprise to all who follow my blog. ;)

I used the egg (room temp) and the ¼ cup water they suggested but replaced the oil with melted butter (you don’t have to – I just like the flavor butter adds to it), I buttered the pan too. I also added ½ cup applesauce. I always try to add fruit puree of some sort to mixes because it makes them more moist or fudgy (depending on type of mix). I didn’t have to bake it longer or at a higher temperature. I also added 1 cup of toasted, chopped pecans. I always toast the nuts because that helps to bring out the flavor.

Additionally, I used my trusty metal deep dish pie plate for them. I think it’s 10 inches.

How did they turn out?

They were delicious. Moist, a little fudgy but could be more so. Thinking an additional egg might prevent the crumbling that I noticed.

The brownie mix comes with three packages of mix – if you follow the directions for the single mix, like I did, you get three batches of brownies.

Not sure if we'll get a picture of these brownies or not - they seem to be disappearing at an alarming rate.

One other note, I don't know what size brownies they had in mind but the package says it makes 16. I know we had over 25 - maybe I cut the portions too small? I don't know but I think you might not want to make them as big as they are suggesting. I am sure the portions are off a little because of the applesauce but I doubt it makes that big of a difference.

I’ll tell you more about the all-purpose flour blend after I get a chance to try it. FYI, the one at Sam's was 5 lbs. or 2.26 kg.

Ingredients for the brownie mix:
Sugar, brown rice flour (rice flour, rice bran), chocolate chips (sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, milk fat, soy lecithin [emulsifier], artificial flavor), cocoa (processed with alkali), soybean oil. Contains 2% or less of the following: salt, artificial flavor, sodium bicarbonate.

CONTAINS: Milk and soy.
