Gluten-Free Does Not Mean Flavor Free

Gluten-Free Halloween Candy Lists 2011

It's that time of year again! All the little ghouls and goblins will be out and about (yours and the neighbors') looking for those yummy gluten-free goodies! But what is safe? Well, I've been looking for a list for awhile and finally found a tweet on twitter that mentioned one for 2011. HoldTheGluten had tweeted it regarding NFCA.  Once I went to the link, I realized the list originally came from Alison St. Sure of Sure Foods Living. I then had to figure out how to contact her and get permission from her to share the list with you.

I sent her a tweet on twitter and waited to see what guidelines she had for reprinting the list.  I just wanted to post the short list and give you the link for the longer list. However, while I was waiting for her to respond, I found a better list on About.com and I think you'll like it better if you are just looking for gluten-free information (Alison's list has more information about other allergens but she has fewer candies on both the long list and the short list).

If you are wondering why I didn't just create a list, I don't eat much store bought candy so I am not sure of which candy is gluten-free or not. However, I figured everyone would be buying candy for Halloween (except me - I give out miniature bags of microwaveable popcorn every Halloween - which is a big hit with neighbors and their kids) and would like to know what is safe. I also figure a lot of you have small children and need to know what they can and cannot eat from their trick-or-treating.

This is the link to the post on NFCA (It's a PDF file). It comes from Sure Foods Living and they have a more complete list here (a word of CAUTION regarding the Sure Foods Living list - Alison has included non-gluten-free candies on the long list so that you can see they are not gluten-free - read the list carefully).

One other caution I would like to leave you with:

Manufacturers are always changing their ingredients and processes - please check the packaging for the FINAL authority of what is and is not gluten-free. I know that whenever I contact some manufacturers, they will tell me to check the label for up to date information.

Have a Happy Haunted Halloween!
