Gluten-Free Does Not Mean Flavor Free
Hodgson Mill Gluten-Free Brownie Mix
My sister bought this mix for me to try out. I never bought this particular mix because the picture on the box was not very appetizing. However, since my sister gave it to me, I decided to try it. I mean, who on a gluten-free diet (diet as in way of life, not weight loss program) can pass up FREE? LOL
Well, I mostly followed the directions, however, I added 1 cup of toasted nuts (not a half of cup – really? Half of a cup?) And ½ cup of applesauce and used a wire whisk to combine (used a spoon to mix in nuts), instead of an electric mixer. I did use real butter (melted) and room temperature egg. I also added real vanilla (gluten-free of course) and tap water. So, mostly I followed the directions, except when I didn’t. LOL
I used a round, metal, deep dish pie plate (my preferred pan for baking brownies in) and coated it with melted coconut oil – you can use butter instead. I had to bake it longer than the directions because of the added applesauce but it’s worth it. I used a knife inserted near the middle to test for doneness – you can use the toothpick they suggest – your choice.
Now, the results looked nothing like the package – thank goodness. They looked really tasty and the taste lives up to the appearance. So, if you try this brand, follow my directions, not theirs. They will be delicious, fudgy and addictive.
I will try to take a picture next time. They disappeared too fast this time.
